Biography

Presenter and manager whose career spanned radio, TV, theatre and film. His first job was as an actor in rep but he swiftly rose through the ranks to become a theatre manager before joining the BBC as assistant head of presentation in 1938. He made his radio debut as a DJ on the Forces' Programme (forerunner of the Light Programme) in 1940 before joining the RAF, and after the war joined Gainsborough Films as a director. He would go on to become Controller of Programmes for Southern TV before moving back to the BBC to become head of Light Entertainment, a job he kept until his death in 1970 at the age of 57.
