Biography
Greenwich-born ventriloquist who started entertaining at 14 with a magic and impressions act. With the emergence of television, Ray introduced his famous puppet 'Lord Charles', an aristocratic dummy, into his act which debuted on the BBC variety show The Good Old Days. He presented some of his shows with his longtime partner, Barbi, though they never married.
He died in 2010 at the age of 79.
Trivia
He once toured with Laurel and Hardy.
Alan bore a strong physical resemblance to Bob Holness, but Holness revealed once on Blockbusters that they were not related. It wasn't much of a revelation, if we're being honest, even if, according to Holness, a number of people had written into the programme to ask.
