Turnbull discovered he had inoperable cancer in 2017, shortly after filming an episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer. His diagnosis was public knowledge by the time the episode aired in 2018, and in 2019 his experience was featured in the "real life stories" segment of the show.
Made his final TV appearances on Richard Osman's House of Games in October 2021.
