Broadcast

Shine (part of Endemol Shine Group) and Bear Grylls Ventures for Channel 4, 8 September to 6 October 2019 (5 episodes in 1 series + 1 special)

Synopsis

Twelve contestants are stuck on a desert island. They'll have to make their own shelters, catch and cook their own food, and last for five weeks.

From time to time, our survivors will come across money hidden somewhere on the island. If the team find it, they can keep it - but if someone leaves early, they forfeit their share of the winnings.

The host, survival expert Bear Grylls, told a press release that "this radical new twist on the island experience will test whether human nature really is ruled by the quest for financial gain, or whether co-operation and altruism in the face of adversity can bring their own reward."

Trivia

Channel 4 had previously shown five series of The Island, a made-for-television survival experiment. This was the first to feature something we could reasonably class as a competition element.
