Biography
Comedian, born 1907, who first made a name for himself as a stage actor but rose to national fame when paired with Arthur Askey in the radio show Band Waggon (1938-40), his slicker style contrasting with Askey's down-to-earth persona. The series ended when Murdoch was conscripted into the RAF, but while in service he met Kenneth Horne with whom he went on to create and star in the hugely popular Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh which ran for ten years from 1944.
He later starred in the long-running radio sitcom The Men From the Ministry and was a regular cast member in the TV adaptation of Rumpole of the Bailey.
He died while playing golf in 1990, aged 83.
