The show's first series was slotted into the schedules at very little notice. It was an emergency replacement for This Is Your Life, after Eamonn Andrews suddenly passed away. Headliners was another series of gentle nostalgia, and was made by the same production company Thames. (The unaired episodes of This Is Your Life made by Eamonn Andrews before his death, and a tribute programme, were shown in January 1988.)
