Towards the end of his life he lived in near poverty due to a £70,000 legal bill for a (failed) action against a TV producer over a format of his, and £120,000 in unpaid income tax.
He died on 7 March 2006 of lung cancer.

He is credited with the invention of Mornington Crescent, the signature game of Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.
