Biography
Writer, broadcaster and self-styled professional northerner who got his break as a music journalist in the 1990s when his byline featured in such now sadly-missed publications as NME, Select and Q. He went on to present on Radio 1 and Radio 2, while also writing books on British culture and social history. Arguably his magnum opus is the 2011 Radio 2 series The People's Songs, a social history of postwar Britain using 50 landmark pop records as a jumping-off point.
Trivia
He's also a keen walker and is vice-president (and former president) of The Ramblers.
