Talk:Spelling Bee (1)
- I'm a bit confused by the dates here. If the regional programme was in January 1938, doesn't that make it the first TV game show and the May date is merely the first national game show? Also, which region was it broadcast in - London? - DJB
- By coincidence, I've been researching this one over lunch. The January date is for the first radio edition. It went out on the BBC's "Regional" Programme, which was mostly the same shows broadcast from different transmitters across the nation, but with regional opt-outs. (A bit like ITV was circa 1980, for those of us old enough to remember). There were further editions on the Regional and National programmes for about a year afterwards. Given the pioneering nature of the programme, and its small place in history, I think that the full competitor lists for the first three editions (and the television edition, if details were ever recorded) are worth noting. - IW
- Wonderful job, great to have more background to this highly significant programme. - DJB
- Am I right in asuming that "presented by Mary Adams" in this context means she was the producer/director, rather than the host? - JT
- Almost certainly, yes - DJB
