Synopsis
Three interior designers are given a budget of £1000 and compete to renovate rooms in one house. The winner from each of eight heats progressed to the second round, from where two of four progressed to the final.
Other amateur interior designers appreciated the tips and inspiration from the competitors, and critique of the professional judges. Fans of architecture and/or history liked host Tom Dyckhoff, who would break away from the painting-and-sanding action to explore the area around the home.
Casual viewers might have found the hour-long show to lack excitement - Broadcast magazine compared the programme to the venerable Changing Rooms, not least because the final part was "here's what we've done to your house while your back was turned". They noted that the jeopardy was approximately "Is there a fireplace behind this false wall?"
Some suggested the show might have fared better on daytime BBC1 than primetime BBC2. Viewers didn't agree: a solid rating opposite The One Show was enough to commission a second series in late 2014.
This could be the sort of show to quietly potter along for a very long time. Or, if they make something more out of Tom, Sophie, and Daniel, there could have been a The Great British Bake Off-style hit. In the event, they might just have quit while they were ahead.
