Go for Goal

Elton Welsby

Granada (regional), 26 September to 19 December 1993 (13 episodes in 1 series)

Duff football quiz. Sides of three - two from a football club, completed by a celebrity fan - answer sets of three questions for the chance to answer one more; think University Challenge in reverse, but with a quick-fire final round.

Preston North End (Liam Watson, Harry McNally, Gareth Ainsworth), who won "a £5,000 cheque for the charity of their choice and the Go For Goal trophy, which will be presented in association with Lloyds Metal Processors by a very special person indeed". McNally was an odd choice for celebrity fan, as between 1985 and 1992 he had managed the runners-up, Chester City.

Ken Morley presented the prize to the winner. He was everywhere that year; those who saw Supermarket Sweep saw him open the supermarket.
