Synopsis

Ten talented young interior designers are set challenges to test their skill and ability. Can they meet the design brief, stay within budget, and put their personal stamp on their creations? Differs from the otherwise similar The Great Interior Design Challenge in that the settings are almost always commercial or public buildings, rather than domestic. Designers are usually given their own room to refashion, but are often required to collaborate with other contestants so that adjoining rooms, or an upstairs and downstairs space in the same establishment, work harmoniously together. They have a few days off-screen to come up with their designs, then usually two days to effect the transformation.

Guest judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen joins Michelle and Alan

Series judge Michelle Ogundehin is joined by one or more guest judges each week, either experts in the relevant skill or a representative of the client. In traditional style, one elimination each week reduces numbers for the grand final. The prize is a commission to take on a larger-scale project.

2021 Lynsey Ford
2022 Banjo Beale
2023 Monika Charchula

Trivia

Worldwide rights were bought by Netflix, and Interior Design Masters was made available globally shortly after the BBC series ended.

Gained a new base in Brighton (the University of Sussex's Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts) for the second series, which made sense for a while given that most of the challenges in that run were in the South East. The show still makes a big deal of being based in Brighton, but it feels increasingly like an odd choice when subsequent series have regularly sent contestants all over the country, including to Scotland and the Lake District, from their inconveniently non-central location. It's not as though you even get to see the city, just the building they're in and that's your lot.
