TVS replaced Southern as the ITV station for the South and South East of England on 1 January 1982. It was itself replaced by Meridian on 1 January 1993, after overbidding in the 1991 ITV franchise auction.

TVS's programme library was bought by International Family Entertainment in 1993; consequently, many of its programmes were shown on the British version of The Family Channel (later Challenge). A series of takeovers resulted in the library coming under the ownership of Disney in 2001. However, the programmes can now not be screened, as much of the paperwork has been misplaced.
