TVS replaced Southern as the ITV station for the South and South East of England on 1 January 1982. It was itself replaced by Meridian on 1 January 1993, after overbidding in the 1991 ITV franchise auction.

Much of the TVS programme library was bought by International Family Entertainment in 1993, and shown on the British version of The Family Channel (later Challenge). After a series of takeovers, the archive was acquired by Disney, but cannot be screened as much of the paperwork is missing.
